Well, we've battened down the hatches and have hunkered down for the long haul. The cars are in the garage (thanks to a feat of engineering and physics). We've got gallons of water and ice-filled coolers lined up in the laundry room. There are scads of canned goods in the pantry (including lots of Spam). Flashlights and lanterns are armed with fresh batteries. And, our "safe room" is stocked with pillows, blankets and reading material. If Hurricane Fay comes a callin', we're ready for her. We're good at this. We've done it before.
Something else we have plenty of around here are Granola Grabbers. A Granola Grabber is basically a granola bar masquerading as a cookie. It's also this week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. When I first read through the recipe, I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I'm not much of a granola fan. I don't dislike it, but I don't really love it either. However, Mr. and Mini SGCC both like granola, so I figured that these cookies would be a nice breakfast treat for them.
Granola Grabbers are made with flour, butter, white and brown sugar, egg, granola (hence, the name), wheat germ, raisins, almonds, peanuts and coconut. I found a vanilla-almond granola at the market that I thought would be perfect for this recipe. Since my husband doesn't like raisins, I decided not to include them. Since I don't like peanuts, I left them out too. Instead, I added some dried raspberries and chopped pecans. I wanted to add some chocolate chips too, but I forgot to buy them. The dough for these cookies is a snap to make and comes together quickly. There is also enough for a ton of cookies!
I was pleasantly surprised with the way these Granola Grabbers turned out. They were good. Really, really good! I knew that my family would love them, but I really didn't expect to like them so much myself. They were crunchy and nutty and fruity. Even though there is a quite a bit of butter in them, all of the other good stuff made them seem a lot healthier.

Last I heard, Fay was coming but had downgraded to tropical storm. Hope y'all are well and "only" get rain. These do look good. I think I've jumped over them in the book but they look great. Maybe I'll try them out...I bet that Honey Bunches of Oats just clusters would be good in this.

Dear Readers- Thank you for all of your good wishes and concern over Fay. They mean the world to me. Apparently, Fay heard I was ready for her and she wimped out! It is now 11:00 am on Tuesday and I haven't seen 1 drop of rain, nor 1 leave rustling. Things may change, but for now we seem to be in the clear. Oddly enough, we lost power last night at midnight for about 2 hours. WTF? There wasn't even a breeze!
Lori- Lol! Whatever works! I wish Fay would come and water my lawn. It needs it!

I love big piecy cookies like this one. Hope Fay keeps on moveing along. My brother and his wife had to hunker down also. We never have weather like that out here in CA. We get one drop of rain and according to the news its a torrential flood!

oooh, I really like the idea of dried raspberries. I know I have bought dried cranberries, but never raspberries. These cookies look and sound delicious. I will have to give them a try and get my kids to eat a healthy cookie for a change!!

meanwhile, why can i never find dried raspberries in the store? there are always dried blueberries, dried cranberries, dried grapes, dried plums. never dried raspberries. or strawberries, for that matter. hmm.
Yours look really yummy! I made some subs too, these cookies lend themselves to that real easy, don't you think? To tell you the truth, one was enough for me. I gave the rest to John to take to work. The grabbers are dead to me now!

I made these last summer, (has it really been that long?) and my Dad now requests them by asking for "those cookies with all the stuff in them". They're awesome!
Well, we seem to have escaped the wrath of Fay. It is actually a bit of a letdown. We didn't even get one drop of rain where I am along the coast. Not one drop! Fay appears to be very fickle, though. She can't decide what to do. Now, it looks like she may turn around and head west again. Eek! Be careful what you wish for! Thanks to all who sent me prayers and good vibes. It seems to have worked. :)

A few of you have asked about where to get dried raspberries. I got mine at Publix Supermarket in Florida. They recently started carrying a large selection of bulk dried fruits and nuts. They also have the most delicious moist and plump dried strawberries too. We have been eating them like candy! I have also seen them at Whole Foods. I have also seen instructions on the web for drying fruit yourself. I've never tried it, but it sounds like it would be a good way to have berries all year long. I hope this helps.

When I grew up our town was hit by an earthquake and for months and years after that we were prepared for the "big one". Thank God I have now moved out of that area, but I remember the fear as a child. I hope you are all safe. The cookies will be hit by hurricane Chris and Chloe when school is out and I have a batch of these ready!
