TWD: Granola Grabbers (And a Visit From Fay)

granolagrabbers1

Well, we've battened down the hatches and have hunkered down for the long haul. The cars are in the garage (thanks to a feat of engineering and physics). We've got gallons of water and ice-filled coolers lined up in the laundry room. There are scads of canned goods in the pantry (including lots of Spam). Flashlights and lanterns are armed with fresh batteries. And, our "safe room" is stocked with pillows, blankets and reading material. If Hurricane Fay comes a callin', we're ready for her. We're good at this. We've done it before.

Something else we have plenty of around here are Granola Grabbers. A Granola Grabber is basically a granola bar masquerading as a cookie. It's also this week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. When I first read through the recipe, I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I'm not much of a granola fan. I don't dislike it, but I don't really love it either. However, Mr. and Mini SGCC both like granola, so I figured that these cookies would be a nice breakfast treat for them.

granolagrabbers2

Granola Grabbers are made with flour, butter, white and brown sugar, egg, granola (hence, the name), wheat germ, raisins, almonds, peanuts and coconut. I found a vanilla-almond granola at the market that I thought would be perfect for this recipe. Since my husband doesn't like raisins, I decided not to include them. Since I don't like peanuts, I left them out too. Instead, I added some dried raspberries and chopped pecans. I wanted to add some chocolate chips too, but I forgot to buy them. The dough for these cookies is a snap to make and comes together quickly. There is also enough for a ton of cookies!

I was pleasantly surprised with the way these Granola Grabbers turned out. They were good. Really, really good! I knew that my family would love them, but I really didn't expect to like them so much myself. They were crunchy and nutty and fruity. Even though there is a quite a bit of butter in them, all of the other good stuff made them seem a lot healthier.

granolagrabbers3

Thanks to Michelle of Bad Girl Baking for choosing this recipe. If not for her, I probably never would have tried it. To see what all the other TWDers did with these cookies, check out the blogroll here. If you'd like to try making Granola Grabbers for yourself, you can find the recipe in Dorie Greenspan's Baking: From My Home to Yours.

Enjoy!

Hope you were safe from the hurricane!

Your cookies look as yummy as mine tasted! :)

I love our selective understanding: health cookies (la la la, fingers in the ears butter la la la). I insist on thinking of these as healthy. I hope Fay merely waters your lawn!
Stay safe Susan! Thinking about you. We are right in the worst of Fay right now!

Wow! I admire your preparedness in the face of Fay. Praying for your safety!

I don't exactly like granolas, but I love cookies, so this recipe might change my mind... :)
The weather is still all quiet in my neck of the woods--lol, so much for my plans of having the day off from work! These look like tasty treats. I hope all is well by you
Sounds like this recipe is well worth trying...so glad you found it and you ladies shared:D

Seriously, you have to buy chocolate chips? I seem to have an abundant supply at all times.... Anyway, glad you enjoyed the cookies and are ready and safe.

Last I heard, Fay was coming but had downgraded to tropical storm. Hope y'all are well and "only" get rain. These do look good. I think I've jumped over them in the book but they look great. Maybe I'll try them out...I bet that Honey Bunches of Oats just clusters would be good in this.

Dear Readers- Thank you for all of your good wishes and concern over Fay. They mean the world to me. Apparently, Fay heard I was ready for her and she wimped out! It is now 11:00 am on Tuesday and I haven't seen 1 drop of rain, nor 1 leave rustling. Things may change, but for now we seem to be in the clear. Oddly enough, we lost power last night at midnight for about 2 hours. WTF? There wasn't even a breeze!

Lori- Lol! Whatever works! I wish Fay would come and water my lawn. It needs it!

Judy- I was thinking of you too. Hope evertything is ok there.

Mike- All is well here. You take care. Looks like you may get pounded a little. Fay is fickle!

Jules- I know, I know. Someone (Mini SGCC) raided my stash!
Glad to hear you are so prepared for Fay with these yummy cookies and lots of Spam. :)

your cookies look delicious!! glad to hear that fay might be dying down, best wishes to you!
Glad to hear you're safe and sound.

First it was blueberry squares, then scones, then cookies. So prolific with the baking. Let me know when the hurricane threat is completely over so I can come over please.

I love big piecy cookies like this one. Hope Fay keeps on moveing along. My brother and his wife had to hunker down also. We never have weather like that out here in CA. We get one drop of rain and according to the news its a torrential flood!
I would love a granola grabber, Thank You Please!
Yummy! Raspberries and pecans! Sounds wonderful!

Great pictures!

These look so great! Just beautiful, overall and very rustic!

Is there anywhere online that those of us without the book can find the recipe? I'd love to make these in advance as grab-and-go breakfasts.

If you have to batten down... these cookies are good to have around.

Good luck - and hang on!

appropriate name for these suckers, i'd say.
meanwhile, why can i never find dried raspberries in the store? there are always dried blueberries, dried cranberries, dried grapes, dried plums. never dried raspberries. or strawberries, for that matter. hmm.

Yours look really yummy! I made some subs too, these cookies lend themselves to that real easy, don't you think? To tell you the truth, one was enough for me. I gave the rest to John to take to work. The grabbers are dead to me now!
Hope you survive the storm. Sheesh! One thing after another. The first day of school, now Fay!

Good luck with the hurricane! I'm wishing only the best for you! Great grabbers... gorgeous pics!

I made these last summer, (has it really been that long?) and my Dad now requests them by asking for "those cookies with all the stuff in them". They're awesome!

Well, we seem to have escaped the wrath of Fay. It is actually a bit of a letdown. We didn't even get one drop of rain where I am along the coast. Not one drop! Fay appears to be very fickle, though. She can't decide what to do. Now, it looks like she may turn around and head west again. Eek! Be careful what you wish for! Thanks to all who sent me prayers and good vibes. It seems to have worked. :)

I am so thrilled at the response to these cookies! You all are awesome!

A few of you have asked about where to get dried raspberries. I got mine at Publix Supermarket in Florida. They recently started carrying a large selection of bulk dried fruits and nuts. They also have the most delicious moist and plump dried strawberries too. We have been eating them like candy! I have also seen them at Whole Foods. I have also seen instructions on the web for drying fruit yourself. I've never tried it, but it sounds like it would be a good way to have berries all year long. I hope this helps.

S(d)OC- You can come over anytime. I'm still looking into that adoption thing. ;)

Mary- I couldn't find an email address for you, so I left a link on your blog for the recipe. If you have any problems, email me and I will send you the recipe.

Well, I guess I'd better get some work done now. Wish I were a lady of leisure! ;)

To all who visit here, have a great day! :D
I hope things work fine there for you and for everyone, darling. Let us know, ok? You'll be in my thoughts.
As for these cookies... I know I would eat the whole batch in seconds. :)

When I grew up our town was hit by an earthquake and for months and years after that we were prepared for the "big one". Thank God I have now moved out of that area, but I remember the fear as a child. I hope you are all safe. The cookies will be hit by hurricane Chris and Chloe when school is out and I have a batch of these ready!
